I, along with the vast majority of humanity, do not foresee this sort of "Hollywood apocalypse film" future for the world. I am not discounting entirely that the future could hold such horrors but you clearly believe it is a near certainty.

Overreacting!?!?!?! You cant be serious.
There has been almost NO reaction. You cant call some small niche of people discussing potential scenarios 'overreacting'
If govts were spending billions, it was all mainstream media talked about, and evryone lived in nuclear fear as we taught kids to hide under desks to save them from the nuclear holocaust you might be able to start to broach the idea of 'overreacting.'
But we only do that with wars.
No, we are overignoring.
So is there any word on what they are going to do about the pool of fuel in reactor 4? I've been thinking about it for a few days now and i don't think its economically or physically possible for them to remove all those fuel rods so there really isn't any other option than to build up a mountain of dirt around it.
Unfuckingbelievable

A leak discovered earlier this year in a steam generator pipe at the San Onofre nuclear plant has lead to two unanimous City Council decisions to send letters of concern to the NRC. Fairewind's Arnie Gundersen presented at both council meetings. In this video Gundersen talks with KPBS's Peggy Pico about the steam generator leak, the city council decisions and the licensing status of San Onofre.

This might be a ridiculous question, but how can one MOX rod have the ability to kill 2.89 billion people. Plutonium is a naturally occurring material within our planet...how does processing it somehow convert into an extinction event material?

It's naturally occurring in INCREDIBLY trace amounts and under very specific geologic conditions. When it's naturally occurring it is also locked up in whatever geologic matrix it was created in, which makes it unavailable for biological uptake.
The MOX in the fuel rods would be faaar more dangerous because it is A) Refined into pure radioisotope alpha-emitters, B) If it were to be destroyed in an explosion the material could be aerosolized into microparticles that could be borne away by smoke and scattered throughout our atmosphere, which would make it very bioavailable via inhalation or ingestion.
(But those numbers are a little nutty, yes.)

An Urgent Request on UN Intervention to Stabilize the Fukushima Unit 4 Spent Nuclear Fuel
Recently, former diplomats and experts both in Japan and abroad stressed the extremely risky condition of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool and this is being widely reported by world media. Robert Alvarez, Senior Scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), who is one of the best-known experts on spent nuclear fuel, stated that in Unit 4 there is spent nuclear fuel which contains Cesium-137 (Cs-137) that is equivalent to 10 times the amount that was released at the time of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Thus, if an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain, this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.

"Oshidori Mako talked at Osaka Bar Association when she asked Tepco , “We see gas coming out from Fukushima plants at night. It looks like smoke. What is that ? ”
Tepco replied it’s water vapor.
She asked them again, if it’s radioactive.
They answered it is radioactive, and it comes out in day time and night time."

Well of course it is.
They're not putting millions of gallons of water EVERY DAY on those rods because the water is just sitting there... shit's all evaporating, and carrying aerosolized radionuclides along with it.
Which is why my soil cap integrates inline venting to pull the steam through piping and into zeolite scrubbers.
Reactor 4 is a crazy one, because it isn't all 'spent fuel'. (The quotes are because spent fuel isn't really spent for years and years after it is considered 'too spent' to generate electricity.) At the time of the explosion all of the active rods had been removed from the reactor of building 4 and placed in the cooling pond for reactor maintenance.
The camera shots of inside the Reactor 4 building revealed that the racks for holding the fuel rods seemed to be mostly intact... the rods themselves were onobservable howerever.
The radiation level in all of the buildings is soo high that there will have to be new equipment developed to even begin working in the buildings. Then you have to figure out how to extract the rods (if they're even intact enough to be extracted).
All of this is why I say that instead of spending 20 years and 100 billion developing a totally unnecessary solution that we should bury it and when we feel comfortable we can go back and mine the burial site in a controlled manner to extract the radioactive materials.

how many mox rods are there at Fukushima? way more than two or three i bet. way more than enough to kill alot people at half of that figure.
if those numbers are exagerated by 5x it takes like 10 or 15 rods to kill everyone on earth. how many rods are in one assembly? a shit load more than enough to fuck everything up really bad.
scary shit

This is the housing of reactor no. 4
As you can see because of hydro explosion building demolished sides blown off
The problem occurs because floor below has been damaged and
wall destroyed.
The spent fuel is here (lower down)
A large amount of radioactive material has fallen to bottom of pool
So if this wall comes off (tremor/earthquake) and pool were to be exposed
this material would come out with nothing to hold it in
That is why tepco is at this moment working to remove radioactive material
to another location outside
In this condition it is not possible
to remove spent fuel...
So tepco is dismantling the whole building
Tepco planning to build another building around
then install another crane.
It will take a year and a half
Many years require to hoist out fuel
Fuel may be damaged and difficult to remove
Humanity has never encountered anything like this
Please join me in hoping and praying there is not no aftershock that
occurs at that time
US JOURNALIST: I feel ashamed that this room is not overflowing with media
I was struck by your presentations that there is a mass media blackout
on this emergency
The US press code prevented press from understanding what really
happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki too
So that the nuclear industry went forward without this knowledge
What can we do to bring attention to this in the USA?
What advice would you give to bring your message to a broader public?
Moderator: I will note that 1600 are watching on the internet, it may be that as in Japan
where progress was made by citizen activists, might be the same here.
Answer: i am not media expert but the mass media cannot operate w/o sponsors
Unfortunately, most media in Japan have Tepco as a sponsor
We need to change that system ... they are also relying on media, Facebook in particular,
we think this is the way we'll have to use the media.
So it's all up to us. If we don't as citizens bring pressure to bear this will be poorly
handled by a corrupt and incompetent company - Tepco.
Speakers:
Hiroaki Koide, Nuclear Reactor Specialist and Assistant Professor at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute. After realizing in 1970 that nuclear power was extremely dangerous, Mr. Koide dedicated over 40 years of his career to educate the nuclear industry and the general public to stop nuclear reactors in Japan. After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, he gained “rock star” status due to his tireless efforts in providing detailed analysis and honest suggestions to the Japanese community about the extent of the disaster. He will speak about the extremely dangerous conditions at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, including the concerns regarding the damaged Unit 4 irradiated fuel pool.
Dr. Junro Fuse, Internist and head of Kosugi Medical Clinic near Tokyo, Japan. In June 2011, he started to use social media as the main tool to educate the general public on risks associated with radiation exposure. He will discuss unusual medical symptoms among their patients after the nuclear accidents, issues within the Japanese medical communities to protect citizens from the disaster, health risks in association to the burning of radioactive tsunami debris and his concerns with the current food safety standards in Japan.
Dr. Ken Nakayama, Orthopedic Surgeon from Japan. Following the 3/11 earthquake, he entered the exclusion zone in Fukushima for three days as a member of the government’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team to rescue patients abandoned at a hospital. In December 2011, he spoke in a press conference in Osaka along with Dr. Fuse in opposition to the government policy for incinerating tsunami rubbles across the country.
Dr. Andrew S. Kanter, President of the Board of Directors of Physicians for Social Responsibility, has studied radioactive plume projections from nuclear reactor accident scenarios and other public health impacts of nuclear radiation dispersion. He is the director of Health Information Systems/Medical Informatics for the Millennium Villages Project for the Earth Institute at Columbia University as well as an Asst. Prof. for Clinical Biomedical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University. Will speak about the need for accurate and timely information regarding exposure to radioactivity in order to protect and promote public health.

If Fukushima Unit 4 Falls, Hazardous Radioactive Cesium-137 Release Could be 8x Worse Than Chernobyl

If Fukushima Unit 4 Falls, Hazardous Radioactive Cesium-137 Release Could be Eight Times Worse Than Chernobyl
TAKOMA PARK, MD--(ENWESPF)--May 4 - Beyond Nuclear today joined with concerned Japanese citizen groups and US Senator, Ron Wyden (D-OR), urging that swift international action be taken to prevent a catastrophic high-level radioactive waste fire at the precarious Unit 4 reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.
Unit 4 is leaning and could topple if hit with another earthquake or tsunami, resulting in a deadly high-level radioactive waste fire. The ability for the unit to withstand another seismic event is rated at zero.
Today, a coalition of concerned Japanese citizens is urging United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, to properly inform the Japanese people of the perilous situation at Fukushima Daiichi, and to work together to prevent what would be an irreversible disaster that would release huge amounts of lethal radiation, dwarfing the scale of the original disaster.
Since the nuclear catastrophe began in March 2011, Beyond Nuclear has called attention to the ongoing risks of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi high-level radioactive waste storage pools. A similar danger persists at the 23 identical GE Mark I boiling water reactors still operating in the US.
“If the cooling water supply is lost to the high-level radioactive waste storage pool in Unit 4, it could be just a matter of hours before the irradiated nuclear fuel is on fire,” warned Kevin Kamps, radioactive waste specialist at Beyond Nuclear. “A fire in the Unit 4 high-level radioactive waste storage pool could release up to eight times more hazardous cesium-137 than the Chernobyl reactor explosion. That in turn would mean the site would have to be evacuated, risking the potential for all seven high-level radioactive waste storage pools at the site to ignite. If that happened, Fukushima Daiichi would release 85 times the levels of cesium released by Chernobyl, potentially forcing an evacuation, and permanent condemnation, of hundreds to thousands of square miles,” Kamps added...

Our governments are full of worthless buffoons, and you all sit there arguing whom to vote in the next election. The scope of the damages of the lies and recklessness of decades of propaganda, that made you believe you live in a democracy with competent people
I believe we live in a corporatocracy that ONLY Serves the corporations. I knew that when Thousand protested the destruction of a great theater in Sacramento and that still didn't stop them from tearing it down and putting up a Safeway.
I knew it when I protested, along with hundreds of others, at the gates of Diablo Canyon, before they started building it. I knew it when it was KNOWN to be located on an earthquake fault (It has been discovered recently that it is in fact on THREE earthquake faults).

Bump for NOT GOOD. This is real now. Almost inevitable now.
Kurosawa's Dreams is now really freaking me out, I have to admit. Scared me when I saw it in the theater and now it's really messing with me.
