yes and no. I had $16k in cash because I was in for 4k. I put the 16k in the bank spread out over a 2 week period. I would suggest you do something similiar

Awesome, congrats. You may get 1099'd for tax year 2013, so be prepared to pay income taxes in April 2014 on this just in case. So awesome nonetheless.
Banks do not report deposits to the IRS, unless it is all cash and it's above $10K. Checks don't get reported at all.
The only thing you need to worry about is a 1099-MISC which will probably be issued to you by Irsay's organization. They have to issue a 1099 if they want to deduct the expense, which they will.
If a 1099 is issued and you don't include it as income, it might get picked up eventually. For $8500 it might not, it's a roll of the dice.
The guy above with $12K on a W-2G, you should have probably included that.
