Uno's sold their franchise years ago, but didn't sell the recipe. Their mass-marketed pizza is shit. The real Uno on Ohio St is much better. That said, in the Chicago pizza circuit, Uno's is really crappy. Pequod's makes hands down the best pan pizza in the city proper.
Other meals, Smoque, a BBQ joint is honestly my favorite meal in the city. Amazing Texas/Memphis/Carolina BBQ fusion with the best brisket I've ever had in my life. If you have a car, or even not, since it's right off the blue line, I might go here if in the mood. Definitely a local spot.
Hot Doug's is amazing, but they close at 4pm if you're only in for a night.
Kuma's Corner is a great local burger place. Heavy Metal and Burgers. People swear by it, but it's around the corner from Hot Doug's and near Smoque, and those two just outshine it to me.
Obviously Chicago is the new culinary capital of the US with places like Alinea, Blackbird, Moto, L20, etc, but in for a day, unless that's your thing, I'd skip them.
Still, my favorite meals in Chicago are Mexican. People don't realize that Chicago has the 2nd largest mexican population in the USA. This translates into AMAZING mexican food. Not shitty tex-mex, they actually don't serve that here. Real mexican food. There are some great taquerias like Cemitas Puebla or sit down restaurants like Nuevo Leon. And, Rick Bayless (celeb chef) has really pioneered a lot of Haute-Mexican places with amazing moles & such. His two places Topolobampo and Frontera are amazing, but overpriced. If you're looking for more off the beaten path, his sous chef started my favorite mexican place in the city Mixteco Grill. And it's byob!
Just message if you want specific reccs.
Field Museum was pretty sweet. might be kind of boring by yourself.
every time ive been to downtown Chicago it's been for music.

Thanks for the recs.
I love walking around new cities, so if it's not raining I'm hoping to log a few miles around the coolest parts of the city. Would that be along the river & lake shore I assume?
The Mexican sounds great but I actually live in a place with a ton of authentic Mexican food, so I'll probably focus on other things.
What about Asian food- are there any amazing places for noodles, pho, ramen, etc?

Get a deep dish from Giordano's...There's a few in the city and the personal size is all you need for one dank ass meal!

Try a place called Sticky Rice for Asian.
Get a proper Chicago Dog, with everything on it (drug troo the garden, if you will.) Eat a proper Italian beef, too. Eat dinner at one of the awesome West Loop restaurants mentioned here (Publican, Girl and the Goat, Avec, etc) Basically, eat the entire time you are here. If you have time for the architecture stuff, all the better.
Proper Dog = Wiener Circle or Superdawg (preference to the latter)
Proper Beef = Al's
Proper Pizza = Lou Malnati's or Geno's East

Ok- one more question, then I'll let this thread die (my trip is still 3 months away):
If you had a couple hours to just wander around the coolest Chicago neighborhoods, where would you go? I know next to nothing about the city, and I don't want to miss the "cool" sections. For example, is the Loop worth seeing? Or is that just boring office towers, etc?

No, sorry.
Beef = Johnnies
Pizza = Pequods, but Lou's is also awesome. Fuck Genos.
Your dog picks are solid, and kudos for the Calumet Fisheries rec. One of the greatest treasures in the city.
