anybody else watch this last night?

not sure if it's truly interesting, or more of a Wonka-like fascination about it...seems like it's just another supplier factory in China...ABC trying to make it more mysterious than it really is

Al Capone's Vault'd

i thought the mystery came form Apple not letting anyone in for so long.

They had to clean up all the 7 year olds and their cots before they let dateline in

yeah, they mentioned that fact about 30 times in the half hour.

but they did mention an audit currently taking place by the fair workers something something group, and those results will be released in a few weeks....I'm sure it'll be a big story then, pending any natural disaster, etc.

I'll check it out later thanks for the link. Is it true they have suicide nets around the building?

yes it is.

it seems they had a wave of about 9 suicides in a short time span, so they put up the nets to discourage potential jumpers.

being china, that's an issue for factory workers I guess, but the factory Apple uses had lower numbers than most other factories.

the constant voice over the intercom is what freaks me out....but when young people from rural areas move to a city and spend all day everyday working in silence building products they'll never be able to afford, I can see how it can take a psychological toll on many of them.

The fact that Apple is worth billions and can't build a few manufacturing plants here is sickening.

it's not just apple, it's every manufacturing corporation in America.

that's the thing, Apple may be taking the public heat on this, but they're far from alone.

you can't make things, parts, etc. in America anymore for the cost that China will do it.

I work for a small manufacturing company, and we do all our assembling here, but almost all our components come from china....plastic, electronic, steel, you name it...it's much, much, much cheaper to have them produce and ship it here.

I saw this doc about the rise of factories in china and some of the interviews with the kids who worked their were really depressing, I mean they were intelligent kids the same age as me, bored out of their minds making radios. The worst part was all they wanted to do was go to school and be able socialize but instead they had to work for a couple dollars a day to support their farmer parents who couldnt make ends meet. The one plus side to the doc though was watching the boom of cars in china and seeing how terrible they all are at driving, there must be like 500 car accidents a day in the major cities.

having worked in an Automotive supplier factory in the past, I can attest to how easy it could be to go insane doing the exact same thing 2000 times each night....go home...repeat.

Its maddening....

China made iPad costs $500 here
USA made iPad would probably be like $1500

The figure I've heard tossed around is roughly 30% more if they were made in the US. $650 ipad vs. $500 ipad is a trade off I think a lot of people would be willing to make. ...not going to happen though
» njpimpin Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:05 AM Process-stop Flag_blue Delete_user Mail-reply-sender Ip Quote
i find that hard to believe @ 30%

$2/hour +/- 60hrs week

vs

$20-$30/hr ~40 hour week

Probably more like $10-$15 an hour with some supervisors making $20-$30. Making a tiny solder on a circuit board a 1000 times a day would still be a pretty low level shitty job here ...don't know that you could even find that many people in the US willing to do it.

yeah, $10-15, probably closer to $15 is about right, imo.

you can find people to do that work, no doubt about it...but, it's more than just people to do the work, it's raw materials, and the manufacturing of the parts for people to assemble.
» LongTimeListener Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:26 AM Process-stop Flag_blue Delete_user Mail-reply-sender Ip Quote
Right ...and I do believe that 30% figure was just based on if their assembly plants were in the US, not what it would cost to make it a 100% US product.

depends where the factory was? Alot diff from over there....Alot of fuckin lazy people in the US would rather collect their unemployment check everymonth and watch jerry springer all day.
