although the gf and i are typically quite frugal, sleep is of utmost importance. so, even though cost really isn't much of a factor, we like to get the best bang for the buck.

what's the best bed out there for the cost?

Eh, we bought some memory foam mattresses for our boat and liked them so much that we got one for the house. Was only about $800 and we love it...have had it for only a couple of years, though. Very firm, which is what both of us like (especially since I've had back surgery). Haven't noticed the heating thing some talk about with Tempur-pedic beds, either.

I just bought a memory foam matt and frame from walmart. Totally bill including the frame was 430 or something. I was told it was the best way to do it on the cheap. Seems pretty good so far, but since it was pretty cheap I am not really expecting a lot, but it really is pretty good. Compared to a 1500 temperpedic matress, it holds up.

clam, you've got to work on your reading comprehension skills.

thanks yem and golgi!

any other suggestions pt?

we've bee leaning towards bob's furniture, mainly because one just opened up near us, but they seem to be pretty good quality and pride themselves on being MUCH cheaper than the name-brands.

Don't cheap on sleep. For reals.

Tempurpedic or nothing. Knock-off memory foam is garbage. You can usually pay off a Tempur interest free for like 2 years.

No brainer.

to clarify once again, we're not looking for cheap, we're simply looking for the best bang for the buck and i HIGHLY doubt tempurpedics are worth what they charge. you're paying more for the marketing for those than you are on the mattress itself.

imo, it's a no-brainer that you don't spend a lot of extra money when there are options for products of just as high quality, which cost substantially less.

yeah, like i'm going to click on a pic coming from theclam.
i'm sorry you don't seem to understand the basics of shopping.
you're a car salesman's wet dream.

i guess i should have asked what kind of otc drugs do people buy...
that would give me a better understanding of the advice i'm getting.

LOL at universal dismissal of knock offs. We've had the memory foam on the boat mattresses for several years and I sleep better there than I used to at home with traditional mattresses. If you're interested, OP, I can get you a name (I think we ordered from a guy who specifically does boat mattresses, but made a custom one for our king-size bed).

Like I said, the Spa Sensation mattress from walmart has the highest reviews, and for a foam matt on the cheap looks pretty damn good compared to anything, especially for the price. I only know what I have read on line and what I pulled the trigger on last week. The thing might end up being a great value, or just a mediocre foam matt that does the trick, but the price is a tough aspect to pass up for what seems to getting good reviews compared directly to many more expensive matts. I saw it as a gamble but went with it and am pretty happy so far.

Air mattress, no nans.

They make pretty good ones these days.

I have non-wook friends that sleep on one and swear by it, no nans.

I have slept on Tempurpedic and various knock offs. None of the knock offs came close in terms of cushyness. They just arent the same.

well, from all the independent websites that i've looked at, many of the "knock-offs" at this point are reviewed just as well, if not better on some factors, than the tempurpedics. certainly, some have lower rankings than the tempurpedics on other factors like off-gassing and heat, but the reviews from hundreds, if not thousands of consumers, just mostly disagree with your claim.

again, we're not looking to go cheap, we just want the best for our money and i don't buy into tempurpedics being the best just because they were the first on the market, they're the most expensive and they simply have the largest marketing budget, which is built into their prices.

i'd rather get a higher-end "knock-off" with all the bells and whistles, if spending the same amount or less is going to get us a low-end tempurpedic, especially when nothing out there is really indicating they're worth that difference in cost.

serious question for those pushing the tempurpedics...

do you buy name-brand otc drugs like tylenol and advil?

honestly though, thanks for the responses. even clam, although he can't seem to distinguish between being frugal and being cheap.

That's a great idea. V berth? I need a couple quarter berth cushions made and I'm thinking about memory foam. Do they soak up water? Mold? How thick did you go? The ones on now have this crummy fabric cover over 4 in of open cell foam that squishes right down to the plywood.

clam - your pic proves my point. the tempurpedic is only 4 points better than the ikea bed on that list and yet the tempurpedic costs 5 times as much. again, that's my point. it's not 5 times as better of a bed, it just costs 5 times as much.

not once have i even insinuated there's anything wrong with tempurpedics or claimed that they aren't a fine bed, but there are PLENTY of other beds that are just as high in quality and at a FRACTION of the cost and NOTHING indicates to me that they're that much better.

i don't need a name-brand bed to impress the ladies coming over to the bachelor pad. i'm shopping with the gf who would be pissed if i wasted that much money just to get a name-brand.

actually, ive heard that most tempur pedic beds dont have give which is good for sleeping, bad for sex

if you dont care about that, get one (name brand or not)

i went with the sterns and foster

id say that the temper pedic knock offs should be better than a regular mattress's knock off cause there is less material to work with and fuck up (springs and such)

I used the site themattressunderground.com to do some research, which was a very unbiased look at mattresses and the industry. Your right about paying for marketing on the big name manufacturers. My advice is to go to a small direct manufacturer.(depending on your location, you should be able to find one easily)

Direct Manufacturer would be your best bang for your buck. I was able to get a 100% latex foam for pretty much half of what it would cost if it was a big name retailer.

ended up going with this bad boy...

http://www.mybobs.com/productimages/414/632/Mattresses/Bob-O-Pedic_Mattresses/MyBob/Firm/000_MyBob_CrossSectionFirm.jpg

it felt like laying on a fucking cloud! i pretty much laid on every one they had and nearly fell asleep on this one. pretty impressive, non-pro-rated, 20-year warranty, which would cover any sagging & the like. as well, we can replace it if we don't like it after 30 days, no questions asked.

got a head-board/frame set thingamajig along with the mattress and talked the guy into knocking off another 5%, just for the hell of it. well, it was probably because we ended getting up-sold on a protective waterproof covering and a couple of memory foam pillows. the up-buying was the gf's call, but i swooped in and got the sales guy to knock-off 5%, so it was like getting the pillows for free! yippey!!! free pillows!!!

And hell no I don't buy name brand OTC drugs. I am quite frugal as well and splurged on the tempurpedic and it was the best decision ever. I have scoliosis and this is one of the only beds I've slept on that I don't wake up sore
