Recommended textbooks were included instead of required. Oh, the NCAA....bunch of hypocrites. Recruiting in the NCAA (especially division 1) has so many rules that it is impossible to follow them all. That said, nebraska's compliance office dropped the ball here.

Sometimes I miss coaching d1 athletics, but stories like this make me happy I am coaching/recruiting at the level I am. Way less rules.

the fact that these were books that were FOR class, but just not required is what bugs me.

it's not like they are comic books, or football books or whatever.

they are meant to supplement the education they are receiving. why would that be illegal?

Brad, I don't agree with the rule AT ALL but it is black and white. That's why I blamed the compliance office. The NCAA preaches student-athlete but has rules like this preventing those very student-athletes from getting their full allotment of books, it's mindblowing.

Here's an example of how idiotic the NCAA is: say there is a player walking to class, it starts raining and I happen to be driving by and give him a lift....illegal. Player has a family member pass away and needs a lift to the airport and a coach gives him a ride... illegal. I could go on and on.

it's all so idiotic.

i heard that giving cream cheese with a bagel at a team breakfast is illegal, but butter is legal

Now you are getting it.

How's this for you? You can email a recruit but can't text them so in this age of smart phones you can email back and forth just like you are texting but can't actually text. Again, it's the little things brad. Ranch dressing is only allowed at the pre-game meal not the post-game.

but these books are to HELP them with their classes!

The NCAA only cares about their bowl money and march madness tv contracts.

well, they certainly spend a lot of time and money investigating stupid crap like this

*sigh* true.

I am enjoying the rules at the naia level now. Maybe my next move should be to coach in the pros? Then, you don't have those rules, just egos.

Can't imagine having to recruit in hoops or football. Especially with their recruiting calendars, the first day you can go on the road, the major programs have to make it to 3 or 4 different cities in one day.

I have to go to lots of foreign countries to bring in players, which can get annoying.
