We might not get the Archive back, I think ITunes had a say in that decision too, but at least we'll send them a message. Vote your dollars, or lack thereof. I vow to buy nothing Dead for at least 3 months, anyone else in? Let's fuck 'em in time for the holiday. Merry Christmas fuckers!

that is exactly what the dead did NOT stand for...

"fuck 'em in the time for the holiday"

do you really think they need MORE money... i think not... they're set... this is about principles.. others are making money on their ART... would you want someone making a replica of YOUR art and selling it places... or using it to create your own profits... thats what is going on in some cases but to come here and bash the guys that made this art is ludicrious... i knwo you're rebellious and all, but there COMES A TIME when you have to pick and choose your battles... you have to realize that things change and these guys aren't saying you can trade their music.. they just want you to do it like they used to... through effort and through the MAIL...

I remember those days... they were a lot more exciting to get a show in the mail than online... trust me... you'll love it.

if you feel that strongly about it, what's up with three months ?

Three months from now will most likely be the time when they really begin seeing/reaping the benefits of this decision.

GDM lost my $upport forever, but then again they never got much.

GD - the band - love & deadication eternal.

I've traded shows that way too. Personally, I think it's a pain in the ass. Maybe I came off a bit harsh and I apologize, but I am really pissed off about this after all the money I've spent on this band already. I think this is the only way they'll get the message about this unpopular decision. They aren't getting anymore of my cash for a long time. Do I really think they need more money? Well this looks like a money motivated decision to me. It's not to hard to put 2 and 2 together here.

That's sounds better bo... i'd like to see a bit more commitment than 3 months from all who disagree with this decision.

SBD's I have to understand from an ownership perspective but the yanking of aud's is a total slap in the face from previous trading policy.

I love the Dead. I have plenty of shows to listen to. I will find ways to get more shows. I don't see any reason to deprive myself of the music I love just because we can't get download shows for free now. I mean, we can still trade them the oldschool way. It was a great way to do it before, it will be just fine again, just a little more hassle.

will etree still allow sbds to be seeded? At least we could get a new show every now and then. Anyone know?

Downloading will continue of dead shows. Just not out in the open. Weither they want it to or not.

Money corrupts.

as far as I can tell - you can use an ftp client to download the audience versions.

Why don't we quit whining and set up an archive site of our own? The majority of the should must be circulating, so if everyone uploads their stuff, we'll have the thing back in no time. I'm willing to participate in the running costs. Anyone?

All I know is that for 40 years the Dead let their fans have whatever shows they wanted. They never really asked for anything from us for the privilege of taping those shows. 40 fucking years guys! Ya know, a lot of bands never let their fans do that. A lot of bands never even release live cds. And other bands have released maybe a live cd or two. But the Dead allowed us to tape EVERY show.

And it's not like they allowed us to tape every show for the rare and short tours they played, they let us tape every show for the CONSTANT TOURING they did! Think about that. They allowed every show for 40 years be taped. We've had it good enough. How can we complain about what they have given us? So they take that away now, after 40 years, and people say that we owe the Dead something.

"We gave our money to make them rich and famous" I see on some of these threads. Oh yeah, but you didn't get anything out of that, did ya? No, forget about the mind-bending trips they've taken us on. Forget about those feelings of love and triumph and euphoria and excitement that you never would have experienced if not for giving your money to them (so they could be famous and rich) so you could live a new experience that would be unique to you and that you know you would never get anywhere else. Forget about all of that. They took your money. And they gave you nothing.

Ok, so we go back to the old way of trading. Downloading is much, much easier. We can get shows much quicker that way too. But ya know, snail mail works also. It works just as well. It had for 40 years.

Sorry, that should have said "that the Dead owe us something", not that we owe the Dead something.

Bobby and Phil are greedy old men. How rich is rich enough?

Yet another reason for me to BOYCOTT phil and friends/ratdog/the dead... as if the crappy soulless music wasn't enuf: Bobby singing Eyes, Morning Dew?? Gimme a break!

(i doubt Mickey is to blame for this horrible decision. Let's absolve him - i heard from a heady source he voted against it via smoke signals from his treehouse in Redwood. And i've also heard he's one of the Archive's biggest funders.)

Ya Velvet They don't owe us anything and I don't owe them anything either. What ticks me off is even with the archive I still bought tons of their stuff because I would hear a show that I dug and I would inevitably buy the release from GDM. Now I won't have a clue if I want it or not so it'll be a crapshoot especially if the whole vault is downloadable. The price on the vault downloads right now is way out of line in my opinion for no shipping/packaging/CD processing involved. 16-18 dollars? Way too much. Bring it down to about $5.00-6.00 a show and I'll consider it. Another thing is GDM saying they never intended for the public to have access to their soundboards. Well, if that's the case they should have kept a tighter lid on them and not encompass this bullshit policy to the audience recordings as well.

Wow Velvet, another lone voice in a sea of insanity. I still think people don't understand the situation. You don't have to buy anything. You can still get any SBD you want for free. Nothing has changed. Are people too dense to get this? Or have we as a society become so lazy that we refuse to walk even 10 feet to the mailbox? Either scenario is both sad and frightening.

Does not change the fact that the music was oh-so-choice. I personally did some sketchy and irresponsible things to catch a run at one time or another. I guess this will be the proof, you either do what is necessary to dig on the music, or you don't.

I just got high-speed access two days ago, and got ONE show before the yank. I figure it's just the way of things. I will add that I am sentimental to the old ways, though. Trading was a great way to expand not only the collection of shows, but the collection of friends.

Happy Damn Thanksgiving, too!

SicilianStallion, the reason sited for them doing all of this is due to money, so your theory is out the door.

wes, you are an angry little fuck that needs to shut the fuck up. How about, just once, instead of spewing your one-lined slams, you fill in some of the blanks? Tell us, oh wise sage, WHAT don't we understand? And then, when you're done with that, end your own life. You are an asshole.

Has anyone posted an official explanation as to who's decision it was? All I've seen is speculation so far. As far as downloading, audience recordings are, always have been, and always will be obtainable. The SBD's that are out there...those will get around, just like the audience recordings in the days of snail-mail.

Keep the faith, friends, it'll all work out.

"WHAT don't we understand?"

you don't understand that as a musician, you don't offer up free music for 25+ years and then take it away just like that so that you can boost your sales for live shows. i don't think i need to go into detail with why

I know I won't be paying $20 for the Ratdog Christmas albumn next year, so maybe they better save there money.
