i completely agree. i feel awful for the young kids and the old folks there. and while its natural to blame or misplace anger, it doesn't make it the right thing to do because it really cannot be delfest's fault that the sky decided to take a freezing dump on all of us for 45 minutes without warning. such is mother nature.

between the time of the beginning of rainfall and the beginning of the real ridiculousness of the storm there was at least a 15 minute window. i stayed and danced in the rain for a good while until sam was done playing, then went to the permanent restrooms between the stage and the campground, then meandered to the campground stage and stood talking to some folks for a few minutes before getting up there and trying to help keep tarps over equipment. i think if you are someone who this would really freak out, like a child or an old person, that was ample time to go into the latenight building or into the stands or to sit in a car. if those first few drops freaked anyone out too much to get their act together and seek shelter (if they are ones to be freaked out by bad storms that is), then maybe those kinds of people shouldn't leave the house.

Without any information, how would one know if delfest/hs/police had any warning or not? I sure didn't. Is it not natural to assume that they would have some warning? I sure did.

Look, all I am saying is give people a little slack...this was a traumatic event to some, it was just a few days ago and people are reacting (rightly or wrongly) to the unknown. These reactions are natural.

absolutely, i give people slack for being freaked out and for questioning and i'm really not trying to argue with you here, i just love this festival and saw nothing but amazingness from those who were running it. you gotta give delfest some slack too. everyone working that festival worked HARD, and while most of us were finding shelter or protecting our own stuff, they were working to help to those who needed it instead of making sure their own selves and stuff were ok. and then when the storm was over they still ignored their own stuff to work double time to make sure that the bands could get back on stage and entertain all of us.

i think just a little thought into the matter could tell you that they had no warning. otherwise they would have purposely said nothing and put people in harm's way (purposely) and (purposely) let sam bush's $11,000 mandolin get ruined and (purposely) allowed the stage to break off and hit one of their cars and (purposely) created a helluva lot more work for themselves.

This from Del's forum...

None of us knew of the storm until it was right on top of us. The forecast was clear with widely scattered showers. The storm that hit just couldn't make it over that mountain and it kept feeding off of the Potomac and circling back around to the Fairgrounds. It took everyone by surprise!! I was in the merchandise tent along with Del's wife Jean and his daughter Rhonda and their manager Stan and many others. Everyone was working together just to hold the tent down and ride out the storm. Like I said..it took EVERYONE by surprise. I have heard that there hasn't been a storm like that in the area for over 55 years! It was just an "Act of God"...and we're glad that no one was seriously hurt.

Not trying to argue either, however, again you are assuming that people know all (like you ;-))...I personally knew none of that. Lack of information...misplaced blame...blah, blah, blah...

Ayyyyyy-Meeeeeen Andrea!

Blame it on Mother Nature, not the people trying to let us have a great amount of fun. Those same people that let us dance our asses off for THREE days!

There is no way you can blame the staff, they have the same weather information any of us do, and I was keeping up with it too "30% chance of rain". And there was much less than a 15 minute window before it really started coming down. We left our camp by the campground stage right when the storm started. By the time we got passed the kids pavillion where our friends were camped we were soaked. And even if you got into a tent or under a canopy and thought you would stay dry that all changed 15 minutes later when the wind really picked up and the hail started. If you wern't right next to the multi-purpose building, your car, or another permenant structure right when the storm started, you were fucked. Hell we spent the whole storm soaked to the bone trying to keep an EZ up canopy on the ground, we were right on the main road too and I can't tell you how many times staff rode by and asked if we were alright or needed any help. The staff was taken off guard by the storm just the same as any of us, but that doesn't mean there had to be some kind of negligence involved. Once we were in the heart of it though they were running around doing the best they could, and afterward they really did a hell of a job getting things back up and running smoothly. I've been to some festivals that have had some pretty inclement weather and most of the staffs will run around with their heads cut off it it rains a little and if the wind picks up the fucking lightrig will collapse or some stupid shit and they'll delay music all night trying to pick up the pieces. Delfest staff was on their shit and putting it all in perspective they really did do a great job responding to that storm.

I was there and thought it was the best fest I've been to since Hornings ! The music was Amazing and Del is the MAN !!
The storm helped people realize how lucky we were afterwards and everyone seemed to celabrate even more !

i heard that the Maryland Gov. called the local sheriff and told him to stop with the small poss. busts or the fest would re-located next year and the money for the local community would be lost !

i believe del himself (by way of his manager speaking to the authorities) had a hand in that.
a few people mentioned that here.
